A busy mini course full of skills to learn, from basic patchwork piecing to inserting a zip. Join us on this mini course to make a story cushion, personalise with your chosen name, this lovely cushion has a secret pocket to hold a story book or a magazine, perfect for little ones, teenagers or adults.

Your workshop

This cushion will be made over 2 evening sessions, 6pm – 9pm

Week One – we will cut your cushion front, create your design and letters ready to machine applique; using one of the following, machine methods blanket stitch, zig zag stitch or free machine embroidery. Linda will then show you how to cut and piece your strips together.  Home work will be to finish piecing your strips and your machine applique if not finished.

Week two – we will machine stitch your zip into the back cushion panel, then layer all the back, pocket and front ready to sew together to complete your cushion. The raw edges will be finished and your ready to go.

Skill level

You must have some machine sewing experience. This is perfect for improving your machine sewing.

You will need

  • 1/2 metre of plain/or blender fabric.
  • 1/2 metre of pocket lining fabric (this will be used on the back of the cushion too)
  • 6 co-ordinating fabric strips 10cm wide or 6 fat quarters from  your stash.
  • matching sewing thread. (its usual to choose a neutral thread which will be suitable for sewing all seams)
  • sewing kit.
  • cutting mat, ruler, rotary cutter.
  • 16inch zip
  • 18 inch cushion middle.
  • sewing machine, instruction manual, (optional open toed darning foot)
  • 1/4 metre bondaweb
  • pencil note pad.

Our Creative Thread Studio sits above our new shop, at 68b Church Street. We opened on the 21st July 2018, The studio space offers excellent light to work and air conditioning, comfy chairs and two work surfaces for you. We have ample plug sockets and ironing surfaces, facilities to provide refreshments, a microwave. However the studio is on the first floor. We can offer to carry your machines and bags up stairs for you.
