Felt making course at Creative Thread Workshops

Learning Curve:
On this course, Linda Robinson will teach you how to make felt using bright colourful merino fibres. You will be making pictures, learning how to use a resist to make a bowl and nuno felting a lovely silk and fibre scarf.

The course will be broken down into four parts each day covering a different technique.

Weeks  1& 2
We will introduce you to the method of making felt; how to lay the fibres down and the technical stuff of wetting, soaping, felting and fulling your piece until it has formed into a wool fabric.

We will be making pre-felts using lots of colour, all these skills will be combined to make felt pictures.

Week 3
Try your hand at making a bowl using a resist turn a flat piece of felt into a 3d decorative bowl.

Week 4
Nuno felting combining fibres and fine silk chiffon to make a scarf, or a decorative wall hanging.

Skill level:
Suitable for beginners and those wanting to improve their felt making skills.

What’s Included?

  • Equipment can be borrowed throughout the course.
  • Some materials
  • Tea and biscuits

Please bring with you:

  • 2 Large towels
  • Two pieces of 24 × 24inch square bubble wrap
  • 24 inch square of tulle netting
  • small plastic bowl (margarine tub)
  • 1 litre, size empty plastic milk carton
  • 2 x carrier bags
  • waterproof apron
  • lunch
  • if you have your own bamboo mat for rolling felt bring it along
  • if you have your own merino fibres you are welcome to use them, otherwise they can be purchased on the day.

A beginner’s kit is available to buy on the course for £10 which includes bamboo mat, bubble wrap and netting.

Fibres can be bought from Linda on the course as and when you require them.

Our Creative Thread Studio sits above our new shop, at 68b Church Street. We opened on the 21st July 2018,

The studio space offers excellent light to work and air conditioning, comfy chairs and two work surfaces for you. We have ample plug sockets and ironing surfaces, facilities to provide refreshments, a microwave.

However the studio is on the first floor. We can offer to carry your machines and bags up stairs for you.
