About The Workshop…
Over the course of the weekend you will create a unique, handstitched textile piece which will house or incorporate those small, precious things we hang onto; shards of broken pottery, a shell, a scrap from a favourite dress, a handwritten note or a feather. We will look at a variety of methods (layering, wrapping, applique and embroidery techniques) to decoratively preserve your precious items in fabric and thread.
To personalise your piece you therefore need to bring a collection of small items you’d like to ‘preserve’. Additional found objects will be available for you to dip into.
Skill level: suitable for those with some previous hand sewing experience.
Herefordshire based maker Kathleen Murphy uses needle and thread to create mythologies and curiosities from found materials and stitch. Her work is identified by a strong sense of narrative and through its application of colour and texture. Under the name Murgatroyd & Bean, Kathleen creates colourful, boldly hand stitched curiosities based on her characters from an enchanted woodland, populated by dark-eyed creatures and over sized leaves.
About your weekend
Immerse yourself in the world of slow stitch and collectables with Kathleen; contemplate your holiday collections of shells, pebbles postcard or photographs. Or that single earring, from your favourite pair which you couldn’t bear to throw away. Buttons, buckles or beads you’ve collected over the years which may have belong to a loved one. Kathleen will show you a selection of embroidery stitch techniques, to incorporate these objects into cloth by wrapping to preserve, applique to anchor and layering.
