Slouch Handbag workshop, with Emma Redfern

Date: Sat 28th Oct 2017
Time: 10 - 4.30pm
Venue: United Reformed Church Hall, Croston Road, Garstang

Super casual Slouch Bag with Emma
This is a limited place workshop to ensure you get lots of attention on the day to learn specific skills.

With expert guidance from Emma you will be making a beautiful casual Slouch bag perfect for everyday use, finished with an extendable shoulder strap and a delicious fabric lined zipped inner pocket. On the day we will be covering basic bag making techniques, including the construction of a gusseted bag and lining which will conceal all raw edges.

About Emma,
“Emma designs and sews a range of bags and purses in an array of beautiful fabrics, the best she can find. She specialises in one off pieces and wouldn’t dream of cutting corners or scrimping on the details … so she doesn’t … “
If you want to learn how to get that professional finish this is the workshop for you.
Good machine sewing experience advised.

On the day –
You will be fitting a beautiful zipped pocket, learn the tricks of making an extendable shoulder strap. Emma will discuss the use of different interlinings and facings to give your bag shape and structure. You will also be finishing your bag with a leather buckle fastening. Everyone will be provided with full instructions and a pattern to take home.

£15 payable on the day to Emma will include all interfacing/interlinings, pattern leather buckle fastening. Emma will also bring a selection of zips for pockets, and lots of beautiful fabric snippets which you are welcome to dip into for your pocket lining.

What you need to bring

For the outside of your bag – a heavy weight fabric – linen, tweed, canvas, curtain fabric all work well. If your fabric choice has a strong (large) pattern, bring a metre to allow for pattern matching, although you probably won’t need it all.
If you buy tweed with a large pattern, a metre of double width cloth (60”) is more than enough, so if it’s a plain or herringbone weave half a metre will be enough.
If your tweed is single width (30”) plain or herringbone, bring a metre.
Please ask if you need more information.

For the lining you will need half a metre of quilt weight fabric or cotton lawn.
Matching thread.
Fabric scissors
Hand sewing needles
Regular dress zip (not invisible) 22cm minimum, to match your lining fabric. Emma will show you how to shorten your zip to fit. Emma will also have some spare zips.
Zipper foot, regular sewing foot.
Sewing machine,
Instruction manual.

Leather buckle fastenings are supplied by Emma she has a good range of colours, but will need to know before the workshop which colour you require.
I will email you 2 weeks before the workshop to give your directions and ask what colour handle you need.

Recently Emma was contacted by the UK based textile company Dashwood Studios. They asked Emma to make a selection of bags using their new range called ‘Bloom’ designed by Rachel Cave. Emma made two bags which are now with Dashwood and they should be making their appearance at fabric trade shows and exhibitions to show off their beautiful fabrics.
