Free Motion Quilting your Patchwork with confidence. Hazel Williams

Date: Sat 17th June 2017
Time: 10 - 4pm
Venue: United Reformed Church Hall, Garstang

You may have started your journey into patchwork but where do you go from there all your pieces are joined, how should you finish it?
In this workshop Hazel will guide you through how to get started with Free Motion Quilting.
You will learn how to doodle simple designs then stitch them on the provided quilt ‘sandwiches’ using a selection of threads.
We will:
• Discuss the essentials of threads, needles and machine settings
• Practice simple meandering with loops
• Adapt the loopy meandering to include flower, stars, hearts etc
• Practice other all over designs such as swirls and pebbles
• Discuss how to plan quilting designs to suit your quilt

During the day Hazel will:-
• Discuss the essentials of threads, needles and machine settings
• Practice simple meandering with loops
• Adapt the loopy meandering to include flower, stars, hearts etc
• Practice other all over designs such as swirls and pebbles
• Discuss how to plan quilting designs to suit your quilt

Go home ready to begin quilting your patchwork with confidence.
Hazel Williams is a qualified teacher and has run regular patchwork classes for over 6 years.
She has extensive experience of patchwork and garment making and has gained a City and Guilds Diploma in Patchwork and Quilting.

Please Bring • Sewing machine with the ability to drop the feed dogs, extension lead and manual. Please clean and oil (if appropriate) your machine before the class. • Top stitch needle (80/12) or quilting needle (75/11) available at Creative Thread shop. • Darning foot or free motion foot – this is essential. If you don’t have one try http://www.jaycotts.co.uk • Please check well in advance of the class that you can fit the free motion foot to your machine and that it does work. • Several sheets of plain paper or a plain notebook, and pencil. free motion quilting creative thread HW

• Hazel will supply all the fabric, wadding and threads for this workshop included in the workshop price, you will be working on quilt sandwiches measuring about 14”square using the following for future reference -

1. Plain light coloured patchwork weight cotton fabric or fine washed calico
2. Thin, flat wadding (often called batting) – this could be a branded polyester or cotton or a mix but NOT cheap bouncy poly wadding as you will not get good results with this. Hazel’s favourite is Hobbs Heirloom 80% cotton/20% poly which gives her excellent results.
Although you may use fabric and wadding you already have for these practice pieces it is still important to use good quality materials to make good progress with your quilting technique.
