Creative Thread Workshops

A Journey in Thread with Janet Browne

Date: Sat 25th March 2017
Time: 10 -4pm
Venue: United Reformed Church Hall, Garstang,

Janet’s work in centred round her observations made on her travels. Janet recreates her vision whether its an allotment, map of her journey or wildlife she sees on her travels. Working from sketch to stitch with hand dyed fabrics and calico her drawing tool is her machine on reverse applique techniques.
On this one day workshop Janet will explain how she translates her inspiration from paper to stitch and teach you her reverse applique technique so you can create your own piece.

Janet will inspire you with her work, as you browse through her pieces she will share her journeys and explain how her process works. Following Janet’s demonstration you will start to construct a small sample using the technique. This can become small finished piece and mounted on card. Your sample can be a building or small landscape, several ideas will be discussed during the morning.
Later in the day you can begin to design and plan a larger piece taking ideas and inspiration from Janet’s samples, your photo’s or sketches incorporating your own style and themes.
If time begin to construct and stitch your larger piece of your own design.
Please note you will not have time to complete a larger piece on the day but you will have the skills to continue at home.

Please bring
• Sewing machine plus extension cable (a machine is quite important, hand sewing is possible but very slow, it is basically a machine technique.)

• Free machine darning or embroidery foot for your machine. It is possible to work with a basic foot but may limit the detail you are able to include.
• Fabric- Plain, un-dyed cottons, calico, linen or any other plain neutral fabric to use as a base, you only need one or two pieces
• Fabric- coloured plain, patterned, textured, shiny, and translucent, whatever you like! (Janet likes to use cottons but this is your choice) Scraps are perfect.
• Quilters wadding approx.. 30 cm square will be plenty.
• Threads, machine and hand embroidery, just a small selection should be ok
• Scissors large and small if possible. Some small sharp embroidery scissors or those designed to cut detailed appliqué would be useful.
• Needles, pins.
• Bondaweb or fabric adhesive, not essential but sometimes useful
• Drawing equipment, pencils and coloured crayons
• Paper or sketch book
• Photos and resources –see notes below.

Bring some photos of something that interests you. These could be your own pictures or from the Internet or magazines to use as reference. If you like drawing, sketches would be very helpful but not essential. The quality of the images is not important. Don’t forget the surrounding landscape might be something you will include.
